Public Wi-Fi Project

Membership

The Public Wi-Fi Project was created in 2004 with our first community programs in Hampton VA and Morgan Hill CA. Since then, we’ve helped communities from Spain to Australia implement low to no cost community Wi-Fi programs. We were told that implementing a community Wi-Fi programs was too expensive. That it wouldn’t be cost effective for the community or technology companies. We’ve proven that wrong many times over. Most of the communities we’ve helped implement actually generate profits from their free internet projects.

Through a technology we helped direct development of, merchants can deliver localized and targeted advertising through the Wi-Fi broadcasts. For more information on this technology, check out BlueMarque.

The Public Wi-Fi Project is open to anyone that wants to get involved. It was started by two guys that knew nothing about the technology, but wanted to make a difference. Our first “hot-spot” was a 9dbi omni directional antennae on top of the office in Hampton VA. We basically just blasted the internet. We’ve become much more sophisticated then that (we now use 12 dbi antennae) - and enjoy sharing our lessons with others.

Today, the Public Wi-Fi Project is made up of community leaders, local techies, people using the hot-spots that tell us if there’s a problem, and the many merchants that host the hot-spots. We look forward to growing this movement.

Objective

The Public Wi-Fi Project was created to spread the availability of Free Public Hot-Spots. After wondering why there weren’t more public hot spots available, we realized that both Television and Radio evolved from free public broadcasts. On the other hand, commercial expansion of the internet started, and remains a pay per use model.  Our goal is th change that.  We believe there is a place and need for pay per use for the internet (just like there’s a need for Cable and satellite TV), but there’s also a place for free internet.

Free internet has many benefits.  Of course the people getting free internet is an obvious one, but don’t forget about the communities that help improve the life of their residents, the businesses that can attract consumers by offering free internet, and companies that can gain exposure by sponsoring the hot spots.  The Public Wi-Fi Project is focused on enhancing community interaction by integrating local companies and free public internet access.

Public Wi-Fi without Public Funds

We’ve proven that it is completely possible for communities, colleges, and all public meeting places to provide free internet access at little to no implementation costs. In addition, through available technology, local merchants can deliver localized and targeted advertising over Wi-Fi, enhancing the consumer and merchant’s overall experience. Whether at a college campus or community shopping area, our primary motivator with our service is three fold:

* Provide free public internet access

* Establish a new medium for businesses to communicate with consumers

* Enhance public interaction within communities through technology

By offering free internet service, communities can attract a broader range of consumers, and improve overall economic activity. The Public Wi-Fi Project helps identify the hardware, installation, and management services for a free public wireless internet access.
